Dave, who was thankfully very focused on the incredibly narrow winding dirt road, quickly obliged my excited request, (excellent division of labour- he looks at the road, I look for animals) so that we could see these guys:
Hello Emu!
According to the Aussies in my office, wild Emu sightings are actually pretty rare, and more rare in this area, and we were pretty excited.
We parked in the middle of the road to gawk at the massive birds for a while, but luckily, this was not a problem.
All. alone.
Good by New South Wales, Hello Victoria!
We were comforted to see this sign, as it confirmed our suspicious that we were in fact going the right direction and might actually make it to Melbourne.
Now this is the scariest sign we saw the whole trip:
The NEXT 35k is narrow and winding? What did you call the last 200k?
It would have been far more efficient to just put a big sign at the beginning that said "this road is no joke- you've been warned"
We also liked this sign:
I am pretty sure if we hit a cow we would have had bigger concerns than a A$500 dollar fine. Seriously big cows.
One last lying wombat sign. Not a single live wombat was seen the entire time.
And then magically, the landscape went quickly from mountains to country to sea!
Welcome to Lakes Entrance, Australia!
We stopped by here on the recommendation of the front desk clerk from the hotel in Jindabye, who promised a fresh seafood lunch overlooking the city's many fishing boats... it was the off season and we couldn't so much as find a normal place to eat as everything was closed. We did however find a cute toy shop to get my little boy husband an Aussie rules football for his desk. We also got to take in some lovely views of the coastline.
After enjoying some fresh ocean air we were back on the road for the last time and finally almost to Melbourne!
