Arthur Avenue- Little Italy of the Bronx

After I decided to take a third consecutive week of vacation in the US (instead of working from NY) I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to do all those NYC things that I hadn't gotten around to doing in the 2 years that I actually resided there. Makes sense right? When I was working in the city there was understandably little time for a leisurely stroll through Central Park or an afternoon spent at the Met. While I woefully accomplished very very few of these to-do's, one we did get around to doing was visiting Arthur Avenue in the Bronx- home to a very authentic and delicious street of Italian restaurants, delis and bakeries. Dave had previously been with a friend and absolutely RAVED about it- so as a fan of all things Italian, I had to see it taste it, for myself.
Step 1: Hop a train 2 stops from Grand Central to Fordham Station in the Bronx.

Step 2: Assume (incorrectly, by the way) that Dave know's where he is going.
After a brief false start, he figured it out, and in to the Bronx we trekked and low and behold, we found Arthur Avenue.
First stop in the neighborhood- the Market.

Yummm, fresh calf brains anyone?
Momentarily felt like we were back in Asia, where this sort of offering is fairly normal.

Oh man- how GOOD do these sausages look? I'll take one of each.
Maybe the Curtiss Clambake next year will have a special entree from this place.

OK- I love olives. Like, really love them. Dave thinks its mildly appalling how much I enjoy them.
I sort of want to hop right in the bucket and swim around in their.
Just a few kinds of meat.
Lovely little market.
God Bless the USA

NYC was having a bit of a post-blizzard trash collection problem. Ick.

How good do these cookies look? Don't worry, I had a canoli while there- and it was soooo good.

We may not have gotten very many NYC-things accomplished in our week in town- it was a CRAZY busy week, and I mean jammed-packed full crazy week, but I was super glad we got this one done. Who knows the next time we will have enough free time in the city to head all the way up to the Bronx, and it was well worth the trip.
